Majors: Descriptions and Requirements

Courses that support the majors within the Business Administration Department represent the functional areas of business: accounting, finance, management, marketing and law. Students are also afforded the opportunity to study data analytics, inferential statistics, macroeconomics and microeconomics. These “traditional” courses are taught with a forward-looking perspective: technology is integrated where appropriate and cutting-edge topics are addressed in the upper-division courses. Students who study business administration learn principles and underlying theories, then apply those principles to new and extended areas of the discipline. 

Accounting Major

The accounting major is designed to prepare students for career opportunities in accounting. The undergraduate degree requires business courses that strengthen graduates’ abilities to serve organizations in the broader capacity expected of an accountant. The liberal arts curriculum lends distinction to the Augustana accounting major. Our small class sizes give students the opportunity to interact with our faculty on a daily basis, maximizing their individual learning experiences. Students interested in preparing to take the CPA examination should consider completing our master of professional accountancy (MPA) program. This program meets the requirements of the South Dakota State Board of Accountancy and others that have elected the 150-hour educational requirement to sit for the CPA exam.

Business Administration Major

The business administration major offers a fundamental understanding in the areas of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and statistics. An individual becomes familiar with the languages of the business environment, and develops an ability to analyze and solve problems faced by the business administrator.

Finance Major

Students describe AU’s finance program as practical, challenging, interesting, fast-paced and rewarding. When you choose to study finance, you’ll enter an engaging program that provides access to knowledgeable and experienced professors, and preparation for a successful career as a financial manager, CFO, investment advisor/financial planner, security analyst, valuation expert, mortgage advisor, banker, financial consultant, and more.

The finance curriculum is designed to solidify your knowledge of major concepts and practices in financial management while helping develop analytical, decision-making, and communication abilities. Students compete in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Challenge and follow publicly-traded securities. This mixed exposure to technical financial knowledge and broad-based business acumen will help you become a well-rounded graduate desired in today’s competitive market. The finance major at Augustana University is distinctive because of specific programming, including the CFA Institute's Challenge, the opportunity to manage an equity portfolio and access to the strong financial service industry in Sioux Falls. Finance students may pursue a double major or minor in other areas including accounting, actuarial science, business administration, economics, management information systems, management, and marketing.

Management Major

Professional managers are a distinct and essential group responsible for maintaining and improving organizational effectiveness. Augustana’s management major is carefully designed to develop you into a manager equipped to succeed in today’s dynamic marketplace, as well as prepare you to advance in your career. AU introduces management students to the habits of professionalism, presents opportunities to interact with private and public organizations and participate in professional activities beyond the classroom.

You’ll be ready for the challenging task of directing people and activities in today’s private, public, and not-for-profit organizations. Courses are grounded in the theories, concepts, practices, and ethical concerns of contemporary management and emerging trends. Management students like you learn how organizations are established, how people behave when they become part of an organization, and how employees are compensated, motivated, and protected. You will absorb how organizations measure and improve performance and make strategic advances in a competitive marketplace. In addition, you will be exposed to the issues and challenges of global business expansion.

Management majors are qualified to work in human resource departments, operations, customer service, purchasing, sales, consulting and leading in diverse industries from financial services to manufacturing to retail.

Marketing Major

From research to creative execution, marketing is a broad field with many opportunities. As soon as you arrive on campus, you’ll be assigned a faculty adviser to help guide you through the next four years. You’ll begin courses related to your major sooner than you would at other universities and enjoy the flexibility you need to double major if you choose. Marketing majors meet and work with not-for-profit and for-profit professionals as they learn to research and write marketing plans, manage projects and enter competitions. You may assist with fundraising efforts, research global markets for U.S. companies, design social media campaigns, plan events, create content for podcasts or blogs, assist with strategic planning, brand new products and analyze Big Data. Marketing alumni report they are well prepared to lead marketing agencies, work in sales careers, research trends in business, and operate inside large and small, historic or start-up, corporations to successfully support products in the marketplace.

Sport Management Major

The Sport Management major is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with a solid foundation for work in this multi-faceted field. The curriculum includes coursework that covers concepts in communication, business, writing, and sports administration. Students will also meet leaders of semi-professional and professional sports teams, and gain valuable practical experience through on-campus and off-campus internships.
