Hands-On Learning

In most of our courses the faculty attempt to connect theoretical material with practical examples, case studies and by allowing students to apply the concepts to their everyday lives. For example, in "Public Relations," students work with nonprofit organizations around the Sioux Falls area to develop PR campaigns that help the organizations meet their goals and objectives.

Our department realizes that education occurs and should be sought beyond the traditional classroom setting. Thus, there are several different types of opportunities within our department for interactive learning.

We have a successful internship program. Students have had great success gaining internships at an organization within their desired field. Augustana students are valued as interns because of our reputation for strong, dedicated students. Your academic advisor as well as the career center are valuable resources for seeking out and obtaining these internships.

Another opportunity for hands on learning is through research with faculty. These projects depend on the student’s interest and the faculty member’s current research agenda. However, students who wish to work directly with a faculty member may do so and seek college funding for summer research. Students who take a leadership role in the project may also use it as a senior project for departmental distinction or honors.

Finally, students may engage in hands-on learning through participation in PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America). This is a student-run public relations firm that allows students to experience and practice public relations. There are several projects each year and student participation may vary according to schedule. This organization is quite successful and has won several awards for their campaigns.
