Augustana University Rated the Best College in South Dakota and Top 10 Best Colleges in the Midwest

Money has ranked Augustana among the nation's best colleges. The ranking is based on education quality, affordability and outcomes.

Augustana University (AU) has been rated Best College in South Dakota by Money magazine, and continues to rank among the Top 10 Best Colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report. AU has previously been recognized by both publications plus rankings noted in Forbes, The Princeton Review, and Washington Monthly.

For the second consecutive year, Money listed Augustana as the Best College in South Dakota as part of their “Best College in Every State” list. AU ranked 277 among colleges nationwide taking into consideration factors such as: cost, graduation rates, academic offerings and social scene.

U.S. News & World Report ranked AU among the top five in three categories, #4 (tie) in Regional Colleges in the Midwest, #4 in Best Value Schools and #4 (tie) in Most Innovative Schools. The institution also ranked #8 (tie) in Best Undergraduate Teaching. More than 1,800 colleges in the nation were evaluated and 1,400 of them were ranked according to their performance across a number of indicators of excellence, such as graduation and retention rates, graduation rate performance, expert opinion, faculty resources, student excellence, financial resources and alumni giving.

“We take pride in the quality of our faculty, the passion for their craft and vocation and how they communicate that to the students,” said Augustana University President Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. “Our faculty goes to great lengths to ensure our students have an education that’s challenging, enriching, and exciting in order to prepare them for the next chapter in a very demanding and competitive workforce.”

Excellence in education is one of the main reasons given by Augustana students as to why they enrolled at the university.

With a total enrollment of 2,118 students for the 2018 academic year – including 1,792 undergraduate students and 326 graduate students, AU reported its highest total enrollment since 1978. The high level of enrollment only serves to reiterate the commitment of the administration, faculty, and staff to provide an excellent education and the necessary tools that Augustana students will need once they graduate.

In addition to a quality education, Augustana University finds itself among the top colleges regarding student retention between their first and second year. In fact, AU earned the coveted Lee Noel-Randi Levitz Retention Excellence Award earlier this year. This prestigious honor was bestowed upon only four institutions nationwide in 2018.
