Campus Safety Alerts and Notices

Augustana University is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all to learn, live and work. We also understand that the campus community is a dynamic place, so everyone must play a role in maintaining that safety.

We also understand that communication with the campus community is vital to keeping everyone informed and involved.

The information found in this section will include specific information regarding incidents on campus that may require action from the campus community. The action will generally involve everyone staying alert for a person or a situation that may arise and a request to notify Campus Safety immediately if the person or situation is observed.

Please contact the Department of Campus Safety at 605.274.4014 if you have any questions or concerns.

TUESDAY, APRIL 13th, 2021 - THEFTS FROM VEHICLES and BIKE THEFTS

The Department of Campus Safety has recently received a number of reports involving the theft of items from unlocked vehicles parked on or near campus.  As the weather starts to get nicer, we have historically experienced an increase in thefts from vehicles on campus.  We need your help in keeping the campus and your belongings safe.  Please follow these safety tips:

  • Report anyone you see walking in parking lots or on the street looking in vehicles or trying to open car doors.

  • Lock your vehicle.

  • Do not leave anything in plain view inside your vehicle.  Thieves will break your $400 window to steal a $10 item on the seat.

This time of year we also experience an increase in bicycle thefts.  Some bikes have been locked with the lock chain being cut.  We recommend that all students with a bicycle on campus register the bike with the university and ensure you are using a good U-Shape bike lock that is more difficult to cut.  Information you should have available for your bicycle includes:

  • Make

  • Model

  • Color

  • How many speeds

  • Serial Number

  • Bike Permit Number (either Augustana permit or other permit)

  • Any distinguishing features (condition, attachments, lights, etc)

  • Value of bike

  • Photo of bike

In some cases the thief is using a bolt cutter, so we ask everyone to observe people hanging around bike racks or acting suspicious and to report the activity to Campus Safety immediately.

If you have any information about any of these thefts or any other crime, please call Crime Stoppers at 605.367.7007, the Sioux Falls Police Department at 605.367.7000 or the Department of Campus Safety at 605.274.4014.

Thank you for helping to keep our campus a safe place to live, learn and work.
